From the first settlement of the English in the 17th century until the Declaration of Independence in 1776, Britain was composed of England, Scotland, Ireland, and North America. The purpose of this lecture is to study British social thought in the relationships between these areas. What socio-economic theories did England follow regarding overseas expansion? What socio-economic theories did Scotland and Ireland uphold against England's supremacy? What influences did these theories have on North America? Key words in this course are virtue and corruption, independence and dependence, and wealth and poverty.
