This lecture facilitates a deeper understanding of Japan’s economic development during the approximately 400 years from the Edo period to the present.
When considering the structure and problems of the modern Japanese economy, it is helpful to understand its evolution after World War II. Furthermore, Japan's postwar economy is premised on its pre-war modernization and the development its capitalist economy. Thus, we cannot adequately explain modern Japan’s rapid industrialization and economic growth without reference to the economic development during the Edo period.
What is the historical progression within which our current socioeconomic system formed, developed, and transformed? By elucidating this process of dynamic change through both theory and practice, this lecture enables students to gain a multifarious insight into Japan’s socioeconomic structure. |
