(:linebreaks:) English in Singapore and Japan INTRODUCTION Have you ever heard “Singlish”? Singlish is English, spoken in Singapore. It has a strong accent of their languages. Singapore is a multiethnic county and people used to speak Chinese, Malay and English as their common language. The government of Singapore decided that English is their common language and tried making people speak English. People started to learn British English since Singapore was a colony of Britain from 1945 to 1965. However, people started to speak Singlish which has a strong accent of their own languages. On the other hand Japanese people also have a different accent of English.
