This essay compare and constract café au lait and caffe latte and describes a thing they have in common and the difference between them. This two words have same meaning in Japanese but is different from the origin of the word and this leads to some differences between them.

Café au lait and café latte both means coffee with milk in Japanese but the former is French and the latter is coinage derived from Italian and created in seatle, U.S.. The official name of café latte is caffe con latte so café latte don’t work at all with Italians. Many people in France drank drip coffee in the morning to wake theirself but it is too strong for stomach to drink when they are hungry so they added milk to this. It is said that this is the origin of café au lait. Many people in Italy drank espresso coffee and a cafe searched for new coffee to please costomers then realized it is good to add milk to coffee. It is said that this is the origin of café latte.

Both of these are made by coffee and milk but café au lait is made by strong drip coffee and hot milk heated by fire. On the other hand, café latte is made by espresso coffee and hot milk heated by steam. Drip coffee is a kind of coffee used medium grinded coffee beans and extracted by coffee filter while, espresso coffee is a kind of coffee used fine grinded coffee beans and extracted with a machine for this by high pressure. The latter is more bitter than the former. As this essay already indicated, there is a difference about how to heat milk between them. Café au lait’s milk is heated by heated with a pot and mixed in the coffee but café latte’s milk is heated by steam and mixed in coffee so it is fluffy texture.

The proportion of coffee to milk is different due to the difference of coffee. Café au lait is made in the ratio of 5 to 5 and café latte is made in the ratio of 2 to 8. The milk of the later accounts for a high percentage because It is made by strong coffee. As for taste, many people may think the latter is milder than the former because of the amount of milk but it is wrong. The latter has rich-tasting and bitter taste peculiar to espresso coffee and milk is semisweet compared to the former. The former has mild taste. The sweetness of milk is stronger than the bitterness of coffee.

In the conclusion, It can be said that this two types of coffee with milk was generated by the differences of coffee culture between two countries. Although the ingredient of these beverage is same, people can enjoy these difference of taste depending on their own taste or the mood of the day. This is an interesting point made by the difference.
