The training content was made by based on TEE (Teaching English in English) which was for teachers at secondary schools in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The purpose of the training was to obtain skills to teach specialized subjects in English. They learned active learning skills like class planning, class skills, communications and so on. Their classes were to review and improve of listening, reading, speaking and writing. They also took some non-English classes, e.g., understanding of different cultures (about Islam), sense (about United Nations) and some others.

English training was conducted for Ube Kosen faculty members in Daegu Gyeongbuk English Village, which was run by Yeungjin University, for 2 weeks from Monday, August 20 2018 to Friday, August 31 2018.
5 faculty members, 3 from Department of General Education, 1 from Department of Mechanical Engineering and 1 from Department of Business Administration, participated the training. The English village has 55 English native speakers from USA, UK and Canada as instructors and all of them have TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification from University of Wisconsin – River Falls in USA.

Their classes were to review and improve of listening, reading, speaking and writing. They also took some non-English classes, e.g., understanding of different cultures (about Islam), international sense (about United Nations) and some others.
Our faculty members had 3 classes in the morning, 4 classes in the afternoon and 1 class after supper, total of 8 classes a day. They usually had all meals with their English instructors, so they were able to use English all day.
In the second week of the training, Ube Kosen faculty members performed mock lectures in English at Department of Mechanical and Department of Business Administration of Yeungjin University. On the last day, they performed a mock lecture in English in front of English instructors for the final evaluation.
We learned how to provide professional education in English by taking this training which was conducted by Ube Kosen first time. We would like to use skills we learned in the future.

Abstract: The main goal of this study is to investigate how meaningful and communicative the classes in an English Village are. Furthermore it attempts to observe the amount of student participation in the class discourse. Four classes from the Kyunggi Ansan English Village in 2005 were selected. These four classes were a part of a 5-day English program in which second year middle school students participate across the Kyunggi province. COLT Parts A and B were used to analyze the characteristics of the four classes. In addition, the amount of actual time spent speaking in English by the students and the teachers was also calculated. The results revealed that even though the classes used English exclusively as a medium of instruction, the classes examined in the study were not communicative enough to bring meaningful and authentic interaction. Students were mostly situated in a passive mode where they had scarce opportunities to participate in the class. The utterances produced by the students in the four classes were either ultraminimal or minimal, consisting of only one or two words or formulated sentences repeating the teacher?s utterances. In all the classes, students occupied a very limited amount of time speaking in English, ranging from about 6 to 14 minutes. These results suggest a need for a more communicative classroom in order to bring about meaningful and authentic interaction.

In Daejeon, a district office opened an English village in 2008 and had a private company run it on commission, but the company quit in 2014 due to losses. After failing to find a successor the district office put the site up for sale, but has yet to find a buyer.
