2009 top 10 domestic & international news stories / Change of govt, new flu outbreak grab headlines The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Democratic Party of Japan's landmark victory in the House of Representatives election in August and the subsequent launch of the administration of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama ranked as this year's top domestic news story chosen by readers of The Yomiuri Shimbun.

Other domestic news picked for the top 10 stories included the outbreak of the new type of influenza and the start of the lay judge system.

The new flu rampage topped the top 10 list of international news, followed by the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama in January.

The death of pop icon Michael Jackson and the collapse of two of the Big Three automakers in the United States were among other major overseas news.

A total of 10,134 valid votes were submitted for the domestic news ranking, while the international news ranking was decided by 6,417 valid votes.
