Takashi, Kyoko A Sociolinguistic Analysis of English Borrowings in Japanese Advertising Texts. World Englishes, v9 n3 p327-41 Win 1990

Keywords: gender identity – content analysis – sexuality print – advertisements

A content analysis was conducted to examine the role portrayal and beauty types of female figures in a sample of 215 print advertisements in Hong Kong. Over half of advertisements portrayed females in decorative roles and thirty percent portrayed females in celebrities. Recreational roles and professional roles were featured less frequently. Two thirds of the advertisements adopted classic/feminine beauty type. The other two common beauty types were sex kitten/sensual and casual/sporty. Two-thirds of female models were Chinese while the remaining one-third were Caucasian and other minorities. There was significant difference in the portrayal of Chinese and Caucasian models in magazine advertisements. Caucasian female models were more likely to endorse facial and body beauty enhancement products while Chinese female models were more likely to endorse facial and body beauty avoidance products. Caucasian female models were sexier than Chinese female models. The lack of varieties in beauty types and gender role stereotypes among female figures in magazine advertisements were discussed. Further research should measure how the male and female audience interprets these gender stereotypes and restrictive beauty types.
