県指定の重要文化財でもあり、熊本洋学校に外国人教師・ジェーンズ氏を迎えるために、明治4年(1871年)に建てられた、熊本で最初の西洋建築です。5年間ここで生活をしたジェーンズ氏は、明治9年(1876年)の廃校まで教鞭をとり、自由・自主独立の気風や男女平等思想を教え、日本で初めての男女共学を実施したとされています。また日本赤十字発祥の地としても有名で、洋学校関係の資料のほか、日本赤十字関係の資料も展示されています。
