What is linguistics?

Pure linguistics

1. phonetics and phonology = the study of speech sounds (consonants, vowels, syllables, etc.)

2. syntax = the study of grammar and word order

3. semantics = the study of word and morpheme meaning

4. morphology = the study of how morphemes go together to form words

5. pragmatics = the study of how language is used

  • psychology + linguistics = psycholinguistics
  • sociology + linguistics = sociolinguistics
  • education + linguistics = second language acquisition, TESL and TEFL
  • the brain + linguistics = neurolinguistics
