Class size

In Finland, each English class was always divided into 2 different groups and small-scale classes were regularly conducted. The average of the number of students was 19.5 and even the biggest; it was 26 in a group. According to one teacher who worked in lower secondary school, they were able to manage about 27 students in a class but, of course the less, the better, ideal size was about 15 students. Therefore, 19.5 seems reasonable size to conduct the class. 例;少人数の利点、会話の機会、指示が出しやすい、質問しやすい

Abilities of the Teachers

According to the questionnaire, the average for the question about teachers’ multilingual proficiencies is 2.3 languages out of 5, besides English and Finnish. This shows that English teachers in Finland generally can speak 2 other foreign languages, one of this is Swedish, which is other official language of Finland and a compulsory subject in Finland. Therefore, even besides Swedish, English teachers in Finland have proficiency in at least one other language. It is usually German.

Extracurricular work

It is not a special case in Finland because English teachers usually teach not only English but also other languages. It is not common in Japan but language teachers generally choose one major and several minors in the university in Finland. It is considered teachers in Finland are not so busy but, because of that reason, they have other language classes and they do not have vacant times as we think. However, it is fact that they do not need to spare much time for task, which is not related to teaching. This average figure was 3.1. it seems just average but they considered marking papers and evaluation were kind of outside work of teaching so it can be read as differences of the idea of outside works between Japan and Finland. They, of course, do not need to manage the club after school. If they are in charge of some club, additional salary will be paid. ・教職課程、class teacher と subject teacher

What purposes do teachers have them study English

From the questionnaire, teachers in Finland were oriented to practical purpose rather than training for examination. The averages are as follows: For examination 3.1 For practical purpose 4.7

That shows almost all teachers pay careful attention to teach the practical way of Englilsh. During the class, teachers always gave their students opportunity to speak English. It was not only when they answered questions but also when they made just small talk. Teachers in Finland tried to make “English” situation in the class and it was not unusual spoken English; that was “around the way” colloquial style English. That makes high practical skill of English in Finland.
