LESSON 9

-A- I think the only time you can have too much freedom is when it allows you to take away other people's freedom. One problem in America is that to have safety and security you have to sacrifise a little freedom. How much freedom are people willing to give up. Freedom is very important so this is a tricky question.

I think the American culture is very complicated. What are the good aspects of complicated culture for you? -A- Every culture is complicated in its own way. One way American culture is complicated is trying to balance safety with freedom. Another way it is complicated is due to some of our broken systems, such as health care. It shouldn't be complicated but in America, due to greed, some people complicate processes that shouldn't be complicated.

アメリカは肥満大国のイメージが強いです -A- Yes, unforunately America has a problem with obescity. This is because many people choose to eat out instead of making their own food. These same people also usually drive quite a bit, instead of walking or riding a bike. Some regions of America are fatter than others. It is really sad they choose convenience as more important than health.

I think cereal is very healthy food! -A- Cereal is my favorite breakfast food. Though there are some cereal in America that are fairly unhealthy.

What's your favorite Japanese food ? -A- I love okonomiyaki! My second favorite is ramen!

What is your favorite Mc's menu? -A- I actually don't really care for Mc Donalds. Though the teriyaki burger is a nice change from what we have back home. I prefer Taco Bell and A&W restaurants.

I haven't realized the BIGMAC contained the four Basic Food Groups. It is interesting! And I surprised American people eat so many Burgers. -A- Yeah Americans love burgers. We especially love barbeques.

Your family is so complex for me :D I found that there are various families around world. -A- Yes in America there are many types of families. This is due to the various foreign immigrants we get; America is a melting pot. I have had friends with many different types of family situations.

What do you think of Japanese family? -A- I actually don't know that much about the newer generation Japanese family. In school we learned about the older Japanese family and it seemed a fairly similar to an older generation of American family. Where the father would just work and the mother would stay home. The parents wouldn't exchange much information in regard to work. I am glad this has changed in America and is changing in Japan. I grew up very close to both of my parents and couldn't imagine not being able to spend time with my Dad because he was always at work.

Doesn't a child have questions in same sex parents? -A- I imagine they do. Especially since same sex is still not completely accepted in America yet.

Are you permitted a marriage of the same sex in the eye of the law in America. -A- These laws have gone back and forth in America. Right now it is permitted in California only. As such, there has been a rush of same sex marriages recently. The courts are still deciding these laws and no one knows if the law will stay or change back.

What kind of discrimination is there? I love people. How about you? Is America hot than japan in summer? When I listened to having guns, I felt cultureshock. lol

Judy: YES! It can be an adventure, love story, diary, picture story... but it should be true to history. Research your story first! Be careful about things like telephones, TV, etc....

From Judy: Yes! That's right.

How do you remember 50 states? From Judy: Like everything, practice is the best! Use the games to help you. Print out a blank sheet and try many times. From Adam: There are many states and some are difficult to remember their location. A really good way is through association, either by what the state resembles or a story.

Why are there same words in states names? From Adam: Probably because states such as North and South Dakota wanted the same name, so one became North and the other South. Some state names have a foreign origin, such as Montana which actually means mountain in Spanish.

Is this class different? From Judy: I hope so! I don't want to teach the same old boring class.

Is this class difficult? From Judy: I hope not! If you study, it should be easy.

If you want to answer the quiz questions, you can skim the text, then you can look at the quiz questions first and then find the corresponding part in the text. Good question! As much time as you want--if you want to understand carefully, you may want to read and look up all of the words you don't know. If you want to answer the quiz questions, you can skim the text, then you can look at the quiz questions first and then find the corresponding part in the text. Don't look up ALL of the words, but look up the KEY words. It also depends on your own reading ability.
