Have you ever heard “Laugh and grow fat”? It is a proverb which is translated into Japanese as “Warau-kadoniha-hukukitaru”. This Japanese proverb means happiness always comes to people who smile, and in both languages, the proverbs have the same meaning. However, it is said that the Japanese often use this proverb frequently, but Americans don’t use it, at least nowadays. There are many proverbs in the world and people have used them from the past. We study proverbs in school or everyday life. Like this example, are there differences in actual usage of proverbs that mean the same thing in the two countries? To answer this question, I will focus on current usage of common English and Japanese proverbs. To do this, I survey Japanese students and students in native English with questionnaire to compare proverbs of Japanese students of that of exchange students. There are many proverbs in the world from in the past. It developed though to teach a tradition or a moral.

How in the world are these proverbs made?

First, I explain the history and culture behind some Japanese and English proverbs. For example many Japanese proverbs come from Confucius, while English proverbs are often from the Bible.

There are proverbs has same meaning and deferent sentence. I pick up some their proverbs and I will make a questionnaire to ask Japanese and western students. How many do you use proverb? Do you know these proverbs? How do you learn about proverb? What proverb do you like? Etc…
After that, the result from all questionnaires will be analyzed to find out the idea which both groups of students have towards proverbs. I find the language is changed.
