Have you ever been to casino?

Yes many times in Las Vegas. I have good memories of Circus Circus?

Have you ever been to Oregon or Nevada?

Both! Las Vegas is in Nevada and my sister lives in Oregon.

Which state do you like the best?

Hmm....good question... Maybe Hawaii, because I like many cultures (and the beach!)

Have you had a problem though the states each having different laws?

 Yes...I'll tell you in class.

This class makes me wanna go to America!

 I'm happy to hear it!

What is the famous food in Nevada?

Interesting question. I don't really associate states with foods like we do in Japan. Most famous foods are created from other countries' food, like California Roll or Tex-Mex.

I didn't know that they can get quicker divorce in Nevada than in any other city in the Union. I'd like to know why.

That's what they decided.... you can also get married quicker. Las Vegas is famous for marriages and divorces in addition to gambling!

When did Civil War end?

 1865--we'll learn about it today.

Do you think the Civil War is sad?

I think ALL war is sad.

I think the WAR is really wrong. I wish peace.

 ME TOO!!!

By the way, why your last name's Japanese?

Easy reason-- my husband is Japanese.

Next, I want to study cultures of the USA.

After we finish history, that's what we will do!

How tall is the Statue of Liberty?

The statue is 151 ft (46 m) tall, but with the pedestal and foundation, it is 305 ft (93 m) tall.

What state is the smallest?

 Rhode Island

Why does the US have so many states?

Good question! I think it's because states formed over time with different kinds of people.

What is the different between liberty and freedom?

Another good question! In terms of meaning, they're about the same, but they come from different languages: freedom is Germanic (cf. freiheit) and liberty is Romance (cf. French liberte)

Do you go up to the crown of the Statue Liberty?

I have, yes. But I think you can't go that far now. We used to be able to go up into the arm, even!

Who designed the Statue of Liberty?

 Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi

How did it get to America?

It was made in America -- by French workers

CHAPTER 11 Most of you didn't read it yet, but that's OK!

What was the cause of the Civil War? How many people died by the Civil war?

It was mostly because of the battle over slavery, which caused the Southern States to secede and form their own country. And Lincoln wanted them back! At least 618,000 Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the toll reached 700,000. See http://www.civilwarhome.com/casualties.htm

When I am absent from this class, should I write a report?

No you don't have to, but be sure that you do the quizzes so that you get the answers for the final test.

About the Gold Rush: How many people went? Who found the first Gold? How much gold was found? How much were they paid for it?

John Marshall in 1848 found the first gold. About 300,000 people came. According to Wikipedia "one small group of prospectors, working on the Feather River in 1848, retrieved a sum of gold worth more than $1.5 million by 2006 prices" For more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Gold_Rush
Also this site is very interesting! http://www.museumca.org/goldrush/

Who discovered California?

Probably, Indians. BUT...According to http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/9280: Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo was the Portuguese explorer who discovered California on 9-28-1542 when he sailed into the bay that would eventually be called San Diego. Cabrillo Day is celebrated in San Diego each year around the 28th of September and includes Portuguese music, dancing, and a renactment of the discovery of the San Diego Bay.

Why was it named California?

No one knows! According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_the_name_California: Several origins have been suggested for the word "California," including Spanish, Latin, South Asian and Aboriginal American origins. All of these are disputed.

Who discovered Washington?

Again, probably Indians. But the first European was most likely French.

Why do many people want guns? I don't understand.

Me neither!! The only reason I can understand is to go hunting or to shoot wild animals around if you live in the country. The only one in my family who had a gun was my brother, because he lived in the country and there were bears...

Do you think America is peace?

Interesting question. I think most people truly want peace, but many people think that they sometimes have to fight to get peace and freedom. That's the best I can answer!

Where is Lincoln from?

He was born in Kentucky, and as a child he studied very hard by candlelight! Kentucky was a "border state" between the North and the South.

What people were slaves?

Interesting question. Of course most were Black people from Africa, and then their children....but there were also some poor White slaves!
